Why You Should Join the Silk Road Rally?

We offer you one of the last true adventures.

The plan starts without a plan. This is our motto. We sometimes travel in old, barely functioning cars on one of the longest routes on our planet. The organization happens on the road, there are many problems, and even more solutions. It will never be boring. Please do not imagine this tour as a guided group trip. This is truly about an adventure.
Road Assistance

We are traveling in old cars. Therefore, breakdowns are inevitable. You’ll have to handle your own breakdowns, but we will support you as much as possible. However, we do not have mechanics on board, so it’s possible you may have to fix a radiator in the middle of the desert.

Safety

We are traveling through countries affected by conflicts and travel warnings. In such cases, we always act with common sense. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides us with strong support for diplomatic preparations and safety information.

Visas

Visas are required for Turkmenistan, Iran, and Russia. We handle the visa applications in advance. You will receive your visas along the way during group appointments at the embassies of the host countries. The costs are to be covered by you.

Accommodation

You are free to choose where to sleep. However, in Iran and Turkmenistan, we must book hotels in advance. Sometimes we sleep outdoors, but most of the time, there will be hotel options.

The Right Car

The basic principle is as follows:
Bad car -> More problems
-> More adventure. We’ve traveled with compact cars and also with SUVs. There are no restrictions here.

Costs

It depends entirely on how well-prepared you are, whether you sleep in the car or in hotels, and how comfortably you want to travel. However, as a rough estimate, for a car with two people, it costs around €3500 per person.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Silk Road Rally often brings up questions that we answer here.

In principle, some of the countries we travel through are listed in travel warnings issued by the German government. Currently, we are the only rally that crosses all these countries. This is mainly because we work closely with local authorities and organizations, who invite us to their countries every year and ensure our safety. Of course, this rally is not entirely without residual risk, but it is really minimal. Our experience shows that the countries that initially seem the riskiest often turn out to be the most relaxed in the end.

In principle, the rule is: Everyone is responsible for themselves.

We take care of all visa matters, necessary hotel bookings, and coordination with local authorities and automobile clubs in advance.

If you encounter minor issues, such as a flat tire, you will need to handle them on your own. However, in case of major problems with authorities or other serious matters, we will, of course, provide support.

No, of course not! We sometimes drive in a convoy, and otherwise, always in small teams of at least three cars. Participants naturally support each other along the way.

There are several options for this. Each year, we provide an NGO to which participants can donate their cars. In this case, no import duties need to be paid.

Alternatively, you can, of course, drive your car back home or have it shipped by sea or truck to your home country. We will assist you with this process.

Aside from the entry fees, the main expenses include fuel, border crossings, accommodations, and food. Here’s a rough estimate:

• Hotels: Around €20 per night on average

• Fuel: Around €0.40-€0.50 per liter on average

• Flight from Ulaanbaatar to Frankfurt: Approximately €500

• Visa fees: Around €300

• Vehicle import and insurance: Around €700

In total, a team should budget €3,000-€3,500 per person, but it’s advisable to set aside some extra funds for unforeseen events.

Of course, you can participate in only a section of the rally. However, you should discuss this with us personally so we can find a tailored solution for you.

The Silk Road Rally lasts for 4 weeks from the start in Istanbul.

This means you can either join us for the first leg of the journey to Istanbul or transport your car directly to Istanbul without stops to save time.

The rally is tough, chaotic, and physically demanding.

There will be nights where you only get an hour of sleep in your car, moments when you have to fix your vehicle in the middle of the desert, and border crossings that bring unexpected delays and challenges.

At borders there are usually some problems and delays etc.

Basically, you have to be a calm and positive person who can take responsibility for himself.

We are not a package tour provider, and this rally is certainly not a 4-star hotel in Antalya. You need to be aware of this before the trip.

On the other hand, like-minded people support each other, we look for solutions to problems across all channels, and in the end, you’ll be rewarded with a unique experience and some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

You should get a cheap car with as little electronics as possible. This gives you the best chance of getting your car back on the road if something breaks down.

What has worked well in recent years are old BMWs, Mercedes, VWs, and other high-quality cars.

However, participants have also made it to the finish line in old Hyundais, Peugeots, and all kinds of other cars.

The general rule is: whatever parts you don’t bring, that’s the part that will break!

Of course! All doors are open for you. Just let us know in advance, and we will organize the return transport of your car together with you.

Some things that should not be missing:

• Credit cards

• Sufficient cash (in Iran and Russia, European cards cannot be used for payments or cash withdrawals)

• International health insurance that is valid in all countries

• Camping equipment

• A passport with enough blank pages and at least 6 months of validity remaining

No.

We always have to adjust the route based on current conditions, so it may happen that, for example, instead of going through Iran, we may travel through Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea. However, we try to stick as closely as possible to the original plan.
